Probably the most well-known piece of art in Florence is The David by Michelangelo, housed at the Accademia Gallery. Rightfully so, the marble sculpture stands at 17 feet tall! We spent a long time discussing his posture, he facial expressions, the marble block and the other objects in the sculpture. (If marble could talk, right?)
Accademia Gallery
We went to the Accademia Gallery mid-afternoon, so we got to see him with some cool natural lighting. Did you know Michelangelo was only 26 years old when he made the David? Pictures just can’t convey how impressive it was to see in person. Luckily the gallery wasn’t that busy, but it was hard to capture a photo without a bunch of people in it.
The hallway leading up to the David has several other sculptures. The sculptures, “Michelangelo’s Slaves”, are considered unfinished sculptures by some since they appear to be partially carved. Our tour guide did a great job of asking us inquisitive questions to get us to really think of the artist’s intentions with these pieces. We also got to see how sculptures marked their slabs of marble with unique symbols.
Wine Tasting at Il Borro
After all that thinking, we headed to Il Borro for a wine tasting. The snacks, wine and company were fantastic. We ended up going back to Il Borro another night to have dinner (and more wine). Someone got lost on the way there… Ciao Claudia!
