Start with Why by Simon Sinek is an inspiring business leadership book that shows how the great leaders of the past think, act and communicate the same way.

Start with Why Amazon Description

Sinek starts with a fundamental question: Why are some people and organizations more innovative, more influential, and more profitable than others? Why do some command greater loyalty from customers and employees alike? Even among the successful, why are so few able to repeat their success over and over?

People like Martin Luther King Jr., Steve Jobs, and the Wright Brothers had little in common, but they all started with WHY. They realized that people won’t truly buy into a product, service, movement, or idea until they understand the WHY behind it.

My Review

I read  Start with Why on and off for a few weeks. It’s unlike many of the book reviews I’ve done up until now in that it’s a business/leadership book. I read a lot of leadership articles online, but since finishing my MBA I don’t think I’ve read an entire business book. But somehow this one got on my 2018 book list.

Like most business/leadership books it included a ton of examples and stories. They were helpful to make whatever point was trying to be made, but they got a bit much for me. I also felt like the same point was being made over and over again, just with different stories. Good points, but repetitive.

Other than the beginning and chapter 7, “How A Tipping Point Tips”, I ended up skimming and skipping more and more the further I got into the book. Not to say it’s a bad book, but just not one that needs to be read word-for-word. Like any leaderships books/seminars/training, I think it’s a success if you get a least one good takeaway. At the end of the day, we all have our own style and that’s not going to change. But, if we can start using one useful tactic then we’re on the right track.
