We’re thrilled to share that we’re moving to Charleston, SC next month! Like last time we moved, it was a bittersweet decision. While we’ve loved exploring and made great friends in Cincinnati, we are ready for another adventure. There is nothing concrete holding us down in Cincinnati and there are so many other great places to live and explore.
Why We’re Moving to Charleston
There are several reasons why we chose Charleston, SC over Phoenix, Charlotte, Denver, Austin and all the other cities we considered. Factors like weather, cost of living, food scene, proximity to a large airport and the general vibe of the city. Other than warmer weather, we had a large swath of areas to consider- which almost made it harder to narrow down! But here’s how it all unfolded.
Weather
After moving to Cincinnati from Minnesota, we knew what it meant to have milder winters. (Photo above is when we lived in Shoreview and I was a brunette!) Cincinnati still gets snow and cold days, but not nearly as much sun as Minnesota. If I had to chose, I’d pick warmer weather + gray sky, but Nolan prefers colder weather + sunny sky. So that left us going somewhere further south with more sunshine. See how Denver was in the running? Charleston gets 30+ more days of sunshine than Cincinnati. Everyone has warned us about the humidity, so we’ll see.
Working Remote
We both have a hybrid work environment right now, but have the ability to work remote all the time. We’re incredibly fortunate to have this work situation. As much as we’ll miss our coworkers in Cincinnati, we’re excited to get to work only a few miles from the ocean!
Charleston Food Scene
Charleston relies heavily on tourism and therefore has a booming food scene. There are something like 300 restaurants within a 5-mile radius. We go to experience just a few when we visited last month. I’m also excited about eating fresh seafood and trying some true Southern cuisine.
Downtown Living
We loved living 4 miles from downtown when we lived in NE Minneapolis. We also liked how walkable our Cincinnati house was. Neither of us have lived in a true downtown environment and while Charleston isn’t a huge city, there is still a downtown area- the peninsula as they call it. We’ll be renting an apartment right in the center of the peninsula. We might hate it, we might love it! Until we know if we like Charleston and/or downtown living we won’t purchase a home.
Proximity
The airport is not very large, but we’re very close to Atlanta, which is a huge Delta hub. We do love traveling, so we’ll see how having to connect all the time effects us. That said, we’re also very close to other cities on the southeast coast. Cities that we’ve never been to, like Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, and Savannah.
We’re sad to leave our Cincinnati friends, but I truly believe we’ll keep the good ones. 🙂 And just like we did in Cincinnati, we’ll find our people in Charleston. Or we’ll hate it and move to another city!
Such an exciting announcement! Can’t wait to visit and explore with you!
Yess! Can’t wait to explore together. 🙂
