What should have been a check mark next to South Carolina half marathon, turned into a Charleston weekend visit. I was bummed to have another state race cancelled. But our tickets were purchased, our airbnb booked and a dog sitter reserved so we still went and made the most of it!

2022 Charleston Half Marathon – Cancelled

Prior to the race, the race organizers sent out several emails with information. They even had participant guide PDF outlining all the details. None of this mattered though since it was cancelled 9 days before race day. Our options were to do it virtually, or get a race credit to Capstone Racing. I took the second option with the idea I’ll do it in 2023. Some people online were mad they couldn’t get full refunds, but I was happy with the two options. I feel bad for race directors making those decisions and dealing with unhappy people.

2022 Charleston Weekend Visit

We stayed at The Ashley Inn, which was a great spot! We were in the Elizabeth V Timothy room, but we didn’t spend much time in the room. I did very much appreciate the fully stocked snack bar. We’d often grab a bottle of water before heading out. We walked nearly everywhere! Including the lunch at Xiao Bao Biscuit right when we got there. We shared what they call a cabbage pancake and steak fried rice.

Friends on James Island, SC

We couldn’t come all the way to Charleston for the weekend and not visit friends! We met Allison and her family at Bohemian Bull on James Island for a quick dinner. (We were exhausted from a 4am alarm and they were gearing up for a big weekend camping trip.) It was so fun to catch up and ask her all about Charleston. She is a contributor to the Charleston Moms blog– check her out! When we asked her older son what his favorite thing about living in Charleston was, he said “the dollar store!” šŸ˜‰ Both her boys were adorable and hilarious!

Running in Charleston, SC

In a word: flat. Compared to Cincinnati, Charleston is flat as a pancake! Rain stopped us from getting more than one run in while we were there. I think my Garmin missed the boat, because the elevation was more like 0.113 ft instead of 1,113 ft. We did have to stop several times for stoplights and uneven cobblestone sidewalks.

And of course to stop and take photos of the neighborhood. šŸ™‚ The peninsula is only about 2 miles wide so it makes for a nice short run.

Visit Charleston to Eat

There are SO many good restaurant options in Charleston! I can’t complain about any of the places we went! For BBQ, we tried Lewis BBQ and Poogan’s Smokehouse. We had drinks outside at Prohibition and in The Living Room at The Dewberry. Our “fancy” dinner was at Lenoir.

Charleston Weekend Tourism

Of course tourism is a huge industry in Charleston. I had no qualms about snapping a selfie at the Pineapple Fountain, exploring historic neighborhoods and taking an Old South Carriage Historic Horse & Carriage Tour. Our driver (Dave) was hilarious and our horse (Bill) was better at parking than me. šŸ™‚

Half Marathon in Every State

As of right now, I am not registered for any other half this year. {queue the nervous smile} I’m stuck on 12 states.
