I like to pretend I’m as cool and funny as Bev with her imaginary book club.

The Yellow House by Sarah M. Broom

I started reading The Yellow House when we were in Antigua. It was a 2019 Nation Book Award Winner, and I was excited to read another memoir. I flew through half of it on vacation and in general really enjoyed 75% of the book. It’s always interesting to learn about someone’s upbringing that is totally different than yours. The last few chapters got a little long, but the end wrapped everything up. And now I really want to visit New Orleans. 🙂

The Most Fun We Ever Had by Claire Lombardo

If I had to describe The Most Fun We Ever Had by in one word, it would be drama. 500+ pages of drama. The story follows a family of two parents and their four daughters. Throw in spouses, boyfriends, children, and co-workers, there is no shortage of salacious plot lines. It did start a little slow, just because it was introducing you to all the characters. I started reading ~20 pages/night and after half way through I was reading 40+ pages/night. The last 100 pages flew by! I loved this book and would highly recommend all 500 pages of it.

Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson

I really miss my run group, but I really loved listening to Just Mercy on my long runs. Bryan Stevenson is the author and narrator, making the audiobook come alive. Stevenson is the founder of Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice pursuing true justice. Highly recommend reading/listening to this book. It was also made into a movie, which I will definitely be watching!

Three Women by Lisa Taddeo

Right after reading The Most Fun We Ever Had, I immediately started Three Women from my 2020 book list. It’s been raved about, but I honestly could not get into it. Per the usual, I had no idea what it was about, but was excited for all the great things I’ve heard. Let me cut to the chase, it’s about the sex life of three women. This might be your cup of tea, but I was taken aback immediately, and not in a good way. I made it through the prologue and put it aside. During COVID-19, I just can’t be bothered to read books that don’t inspire or distract me in a good way.
