At the risk of sounding like a book worm, I’m sharing the 4 1/2 books I read during our 4th of July cabin vacation.
Travels with Charley
John Steinbeck is better known for his novels like The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men, but this story is about a real trip across America in 1960 with his distinguished French poodle named Charley. Based on recent events it’s obvious that racial tension has unfortunately not changed all that much in the last 50+ years. Besides that sad realization I really enjoyed the book; Steinbeck’s writing is superb.
To Catch A Treat
Of course another book with dogs on the cover caught my eye at the library. I read this in between throwing the ball for Sophie. I tried to be surprised by the inevitable twist at the end, but it was just too obvious. I loved the dog references though, especially while looking out on the yard at Sophie.
7 Letters from Paris
I heard about this book from this book list and added it to my library cart. It’s a true love story of an American who gets swept off their feet by a French guy. I liked it, but had to skip over reading the actual letters because they were just a little too sappy.
Wreck and Order
I’m half through this book and it’s a bit disturbing how self-destructive Elsie is, yet I can’t stop reading it. The character development is fantastic, I so badly want her to break free from her terrible relationship, quit her bad habits and do something with her intelligence.
A Window Opens
This was a feel-good easy novel about how Alice Pearse juggles all the demands of being a wife, mom, daughter, friend, and working professional. I randomly picked this off the shelf at the library, but it’s not surprising that Amazon also recommended The Nest and Where’d You Go, Bernadette, both of which I mentioned liking a lot. A Window Opens would be perfect read by the lake or pool or river or any other body of water.

i wasn’t the biggest fan of a window opens… i mean, i liked it well enough, but then it would all of a sudden insert some deep heavy stuff and i felt like it couldn’t decide if it wanted to be funny or serious. i didn’t hate it though. wreck and order sounds interesting!
You know what? You’re right! It did hop between light and funny and dark and serious.
First off, amazing views at the cabin. That’s a terrific place to while away the day with a book or four!
I always feel weird reading love letters, even in books. Like they’re private and not for me to see.
