Painting an Open Concept House: Sherwin Williams Pavestone

Choosing a paint color for an open concept house is challenging, which is why we selected Pavestone from Sherwin Williams. It’s a classic neutral greige. Can you tell which one it is above? 🙂

Painting Samples

Before they did the skim coating, we had to pick out a color and you know how I feel about getting paint samples. We brought the new countertop, carpet and entry flooring into a Sherwin Williams and selected four samples. (My basil plant is surviving the MN winter inside!)

From left to right, top to bottom the colors are Pavestone, Skyline Steel, Backdrop, and Morris Room Grey. Did you guess right?

I painted samples on almost every wall surface, it’s crazy how different the colors look! I painted the samples on a few different walls in the living room, in the kitchen, in the entry. We wanted to make sure it went with the flooring (4 different ones!), countertop, white trim, and the front door color.

My first reaction was a tie between Pavestone and Morris Room Grey (#4). Skyline Steel (#2) was too light and Backdrop (#3) was too dark.

After looking at them for a few days we decided that Morris Room Grey was too brown.

Pavestone is only a little darker than the current color, Dolphin Fin, that I painted earlier this year. During the day the living and dining rooms get a lot of light, but the entry, hallway and kitchen tend to be dark. I love how open our house is, but it also makes selecting a paint color much harder!

I promise a full reveal of the living and dining room next week! Our entry is close as well, we just need another coat of white paint on the new closet doors and our kitchen will be done after the backsplash is installed today! Lots of reveal pictures coming next week.
