Knowing we’d get cabin fever during our 4th of July vacation we booked a tee time at a nearby course.
Pokegama Golf Course is on Pokegama Lake in Grand Rapids, MN, which is just 20 minutes north of our cabin. The weather was gorgeous all week until Thursday when we were scheduled to play. We cancelled our Thursday tee time and watched the weather report for Friday. It was spotty but we decided to take another shot at an 8am tee time on Friday.
When we got to the course there were only a few other brave singles playing. The radar looked good and the chance for rain was only 5%, but the clouds…
It was misty for the first 4 holes and because of the previous night’s downpour the course was extremely soggy. The cart GPS helped us avoid driving on the fairways as much as possible.
By about the 6th hole the sky started clearing up. Nolan went back and forth using my new driver and his driver.
We drank water and Gatorade on the front 9, but before starting the 10th hole we grabbed a bucket of beer from the club house. Then the sun finally came out! Let’s just say our moods improved greatly. 🙂
The rest of the course went by really fast. Hole 14 was really fun, because of the bunker and sharp drop-off into the water. We let a 4-some play through us at hole 15, because, well, I’m slow. We later sat near them on the patio and one of them shot a 66!
Afterwards we sat at the clubhouse patio that overlooks the lake and the 18th hole. It started to get cloudy again, but it wasn’t raining and the temperature was comfortable. I had a turkey burger with black bean/corn salsa and guacamole and Nolan had the Velaro burger with egg, ghost pepper cheese and jalapeños.
Of course (pun intended) neither of us were happy with our scores; I shot a 128 and Nolan shot a 101. I only lost one ball though! After only 3 lessons and playing a 9 hole, par 3 course in Vegas I think I need to cut myself a break.
