When we first moved to our Cincinnati house we joked about having a formal living room. I associate them with furniture you can’t sit on, carpet you can’t walk on, and floral patterns that hurt your eyes. So instead of putting any thought into our formal living room, we just dropped our basement furniture and called it good. Then, something surprising happened. We started using the formal living room! Thus, it needed some additional design help.

I couldn’t find a picture with the same angle, but it was basically the same as our Shoreview house basement. I put up the same art, used the same pillows and side tables. All of which were haphazardly purchased and thrown together.

I know what I like when I see it, but I have trouble putting it altogether. I’m notorious for just buying a few random cute things from Home Goods and calling it “designed”. Or in this case, two white chairs from World Market. So, instead of continuing to cobble stuff together, I contacted Emily from Go Haus Go to put together a design for our formal living room.

Formal Living Room Inspiration Photos

I’ve read Go Haus Go for awhile now and love her style! Bonus, she lives in the area and does room designs for people like me! She came over to our house, took measurements, and we chatted for a long time. She then sent me several inspiration photos. Nolan and I studied them all and loved the bottom middle and bottom right. Our least favorite was the bottom left.

Formal Living Room Design Plan

From the inspiration photos, she put together the above design plan. The plan also included the opposite wall that has the thermostat and record player. It included several options for each purchased piece. It took us several months to review and then decide what we were going to incorporate. Emily has been so patient with my endless questions and emails. So far I’ve ordered two rugs, a couch, two sconces, artwork, a side table, and a record holder. Still on the hunt for a coffee table, lamp, pillows, and turntable table/record storage.
