Similar to my Currently Reading: March 2017 post, September’s Currently post is going to be all about books!

Read

In September I finished three books, the first one being Lab Girl by Hope Jahren from my 2017 book list. Again, I didn’t know anything about it before picking it up. I was so pleasantly surprised to find it was a memoir, starting with Jarhen’s upbringing in rural Minnesota! The book describes her personal and professional life as a female scientist. I loved it! In a way it reminded me of Sheryl Strayed’s Wild, which I also enjoyed.

Second, was The Wangs vs. the World by Jade Chang. In contrast to Lab Girl, The Wangs vs. the World is a highly entertaining and funny novel about a family that loses their fortune. The family is forced to pack up and take a road trip from California to New York to the eldest sister’s house. Entertaining, but not real deep.

The third book I read in September was The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen by Hendrik Groen. Recommend by my mom, it harken me back to A Man Called Ove, which I also enjoyed. Amazon does a great job describing this hilarious read: “Technically speaking, Hendrik Groen is….elderly. But at age 83 1/4, this feisty, indomitable curmudgeon has no plans to go out quietly. Bored of weak tea and potted geraniums, exasperated by the indignities of aging, Hendrik has decided to rebel–on his own terms. He begins writing an exposé: secretly recording the antics of day-to-day life in his retirement home, where he refuses to take himself, or his fellow “inmates,” too seriously.” I hope when I’m 83 I’ll be just like Hendrik.

Didn’t Read

Another case of I-had-no-idea-what-this-book-was-about happened with What Belongs to You. I read the first page and decided it wasn’t for me. No harm, no foul, just not for me.

With 90 days left in 2017, I’m pretty sure I can cross off all the books on my 2017 book list! I just started The North Water– so far, so good. I need to start thinking about a 2018 book list now… any recommendations?
